ORGANIZING ARCHIVES

You know... it's a good thing to create a list of all the textbooks and curriculum that you have for your children and tuck this list into your purse or stash near your computer. It's so easy to duplicate materials, or then forget you have something you're saving for a younger child and buy it again at a used sale or something like that!

You can use a computer to make a database listing, or perhaps 3 x 5 cards, or even make a fairly detailed listing including information like the edition, teacher's guide, tests, answer keys and lab books... anything to help you remember what you have accumuluated! You'll be surprised at your savings over the years; only take some caution not to collect older volumes/editions which might be difficult to find answer keys and other important matching materials! Happy shopping!

Be careful about buying lots of after year stuff like wrapping paper and such. it might sound like a great deal and all, but after you spend a year keeping the stuff safe, buying containers to keep it and then trying to remember you have it next Christmas, it might just be easier to buy it at your local Dollar Store when it's Christmas time again!

Once a month, our family has a day where we set out three boxes. One is for clothes that are too small, unliked or just not wanted for whatever reason. One box is for items that are likewize, unwanted. And the last box is for broken or unusuable stuff. Everyone has to contribute. And when we are done, those items are either donated to charity or put out to the curb. It's easy, and routine, like checking your smoke detector, and it's REALLY solving our clutter problem a little bit at a time! No need to have huge organizing projects, it's just an hour or so and we're done and off to our weekend fun!

Instead of keeping large boxes of papers and projects for each of my children, each year, I sort them out, save a few actual projects and then I scan or take pictures of key works with my digital camera. The scanned papers look great and all of the material condenses down to just a CD or two for each child.

I do this after school evaulations. It preserves some of the day to day worksheets and papers that aren't exactly super precious and gives us much more room to save the really special items!
