A portable tape player can be a great learning tool for your beginning reader. Create a few "books on tape" for them, by reading their favorite books into a cassette back and giving them the opportunity to read along whenever they want! Kids love the novelty of the tape recorder and it really helps to get them reading on their own!

We love to IM each other, from our different computers in the house. It's fun and it's a great way to encourage a beginning typer.

Every so often, machines get too old and even though you think that you might be saving money by keeping an older machine running... research it. I thought my washing machine was something to keep running when it needed repair, and in the end, I was reluctant to get a new one. But the new technology is so much more efficient and water saving, by keeping up with some of the new advances, we're saving a great deal on water, electricity and quality of washing.

Not everything is this way, but some technology really is worth considering and investing in.
